Our speaker for the November 21 ASIS meeting at Lennox Town Center was Dustin Batten. Dustin is the Assistant Director of THE OSU Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) Security Force. Dustin started his career in 2011 as an OSU security officer and worked his way up through positions of increasing responsibility, attaining his present position in 2016. Prior to 2011, he served 21 years in the U.S. Army.
Dustin spoke about the wide variety of incidents that occur at the OSUWMC. Violence in health facilities and against health workers is a high rate due to drugs, costs, mental health cases, requirement to care for patients of all walks of life, pain and anguish. The security group has over 100 employees and is responsible for covering numerous OSU medical facilities in central Ohio. When extra assistance is needed, they can call upon OSU campus police and Columbus area police departments. His officers are also involved in searches and reacquiring contraband.
Dustin spoke about Body cameras by Axion, training to use them and how they can playback events prior to critical encounters. He also spoke the S26B-7 Teasers and the training and deployment of these devices. The lecture was very informative for the audience who may have been unfamiliar with the unique aspects of hospital security.
