The speaker for the February 20, 2025 Columbus ASIS Chapter meeting was T.J. Bock, Director of Protective Services at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and Vice Chair of the IAHSS Central Ohio Chapter.

Mr. Bock's  topic was:  Unique Challenges In Healthcare Security in a Pediatric Setting.

With a background in security management, T.J. previously served at AWS as a Security Manager building teams, programs and processes across the globe acquiring skills in safeguarding critical infrastructures. His leadership and experience in protective services, from Officer to Director, combines a wealth of industry knowledge and a commitment to ensuring safety and security in healthcare environments.

Some notes from Mr. Bock's presentation include:

Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) has 90 buildings with over 16,000 employees
There were 19,000 inpatient visits in 2022
The hospital has two heliports
There were 66,497 calls for security services in 2024
The hospital has 2,208 cameras
The hospital has 4,279 card readers

 

Special Considerations with a Pediatric Facility include:

Vulnerable patients
Behavioral issues
Sex offender data base record issues
Human trafficking issues
Legal guardianship issues
Parental rights
Flu restrictions
Workplace Violence
Badging and access
NCH has numerous external satellite facilities throughout the Columbus area, numerous parking lots to monitor and health care workers have some of the highest levels of threats and assaults among all occupational categories.
